Stephen Hough performs an ethereal Chopin nocturne
Stephen Hough’s recent recording on Hyperion, In the Night, includes pieces that all explore nineteenth century composers’ obsessions with nighttime themes.
‘Stephen Hough’s album takes wing in an atmosphere of tension and somberness,’ writes Jessica Duchen in her review of the album in our June issue. ‘Built around his own second sonata, subtitled ‘notturno luminoso’, its programme extends on either side through soundscapes of night by Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann.’
Chopin’s nocturnes evoke the night by their very titles. Nocturne No. 2 in D flat major, which is available to download here, opens with an ethereal theme that builds to become more and more elaborate.
