Stormy CPE Bach from the Pulcinella Orchestra
‘Neither booklet nor internet reveals anything about the Pulcinella Orchestra, but its 13 strings and continuo fortepiano are a force to be reckoned with,’ states George Pratt in his review of this recording in the June issue of BBC Music Magazine.
‘Led by cellist Ophélie Gaillard, the group’s impeccable ensemble and palpable enthusiasm make it an ideal vehicle for CPE Bach at his most stormy and passionate,’ Pratt continues.
CPE Bach composed his Cello Concerto in A minor, Wq. 170 (H. 432) in 1750, the year of his father’s death. The work is a transcription by the composer of his own Harpsichord Concerto H. 430. The opening movement, which you can download now, is characterised by sharp contrasts and dramatic arpeggio motifs.
