A Boy Was Born Festival - Dame Josephine Barstow Masterclass with Q&A

Department of Music Musicologist Dr Dominic McHugh interviews Dame Josephine Barstow about her career and notable Benjamin Britten opera roles. Members of the public are then invited to watch as students from the Department of music participate in a vocal masterclass with Dame Josephine.

Josephine Barstow is recognised as one of the world’s leading singing actresses. During a long career she has performed in most of the world’s major opera houses and with many of the great conductors singing a varied repertoire of Verdi‚ Richard Strauss‚ Puccini and Britten, who’s roles have included the Second Niece, and Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes and Elizabeth in Gloriana. She has recorded Albert Herring, Gloriana and Owen Wingrave. In 1985 Josephine Barstow was awarded a C.B.E. and the International Directors’ Fidelio Award. In 1995 she was made a D.B.E.
