'Recorded in the gentle cushioning, warm ambience of a Zurich church, Steinbacher and colleagues sound almost like a throwback to the 1970s,’ writes Julian Haylock in his review of this recording in our July issue.

The final concerto in A is believed to have been Mozart’s favourite of the violin concertos he wrote. He interrupts the elegant minuet of the finale with an ‘Alla Turca’ section in 2/4 time. The melody was taken from the ballet Le gelosie del serraglio, written for a performance of Mozart’s opera Lucio Silla.

‘The deliciously ‘noisy’ Turkish episode of No. 5’s finale is affectionately shaped rather than manically driven in the authentic style,’ writes Haylock. 'Steinbacher has few serious contemporary rivals,' he concludes.
