The commemorations of the outbreak of the First World War continue with a Prom dedicated to the work of composers involved in the conflict, many of whom featured in our June issue.

The first half hosts music by Stephan, Kelly and Butterworth, all of whom lost their lives in the War. The three works performed here echo the horrors and deep sorrows of conflict and the lead up to it.

The fields of Flanders had a significant impact on Vaughan Williams as he served there in the Field Ambulance Service. The Pastoral Symphony is his vision of a war-raved France.

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Andrew Manze, with soloists Allan Clayton (tenor) and Roderick Williams (baritone).
