Radio 3 Live in Concert: York Early Music Festival
Live from Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York
Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI perform from Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York as part of the York Early Music Festival.
The ensemble rediscover the sounds of medieval Spain, Provence and Italy alongside traditional folk music from Turkey, Persia and Armenia.
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Spain was a melting pot where Christian, Jewish and Islamic cultures co-existed. Manuscripts from the Castilian court of Alfonso X depict musicians playing instruments that resemble those played in the Adriatic, the Middle East and North Africa.
It was these manuscripts that inspired Savall’s concept of gathering a group of musicians from the east and west.
