The Largo from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9: the ‘New World’ is the subject of today’s programme – the first in the fourteenth series of Soul Music. It is an enduring piece that holds special meaning for many people.

Anti-apartheid campaigner Albie Sachs discusses the piece’s role in giving him hope while he was held in solitary confinement; whistling its tune allowed him to feel a contact with the outside world and retain some spirit.

Margaret Caldicott, the daughter of a woman held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, illuminates the importance of the piece to her mother during her capture.
