In recent weeks Words and Music has explored themes such as Quest and On the road. Both journeys of some kind, it seems appropriate that, as we journey towards the end of the summer, the next is an episode called I need a holiday.

And this holiday has all you might expect. Readings by John Betjeman and Michael Rosen take us to the seaside and confront us with squabbling children respectively, illustrated by Michael Barson’s Off on Holiday. The holiday at home and the centuries-old obsession of trampling the byways of our own land is illustrated too in Vaughan Williams’ setting of Stevenson’s Vagabond.

Abroad, Liszt’s Annees de pelerinage – 2me annee, Italie furthers our travels while the tourist gets a mention with an excerpt of Gershwin’s An American in Paris.
