Our first cover star of 2018 is the composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, the centenary of whose birth is being celebrated across the world this year. His friend and biographer Humphrey Burton explores the life of Bernstein, and we meet friends, colleagues and family members of the man himself. Works by Bernstein also appear on your free cover CD, performed by American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. Elsewhere in the issue, James Naughtie meets BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard, and Claire Jackson looks into the 10 musical instruments discovered in the Mary Rose warship, which was raised in 1982.
