Listen to a clip from Schubert’s Fifth Symphony
Roger Norrington conducts the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR
Schubert’s Fifth Symphony was written when the composer was a teenager and is clearly influenced by symphonies of the classical era – including Mozart’s No. 40.
The works were written to be performed by amateur orchestras and are not as well known as the brilliant Unfinished and Great Symphonies. In this new recording on the Hänssler Classic label, Roger Norrington conducts the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart.
Writing in the Christmas issue of BBC Music Magazine – out now – our critic, Misha Donat, said: ‘Schubert’s early Symphonies are small beer beside his two masterpieces of the genre, but they are works of considerable charm, and – in their outer movements – irrepressible energy.’
