2016 British Composer Awards shortlist announced

Harrison Birtwistle, James MacMillan and Cecilia McDowell among nominees

The shortlist for the 2016 British Composer Awards has been announced.

In a break from previous practice, this year entries were judged anonymously for all categories apart from Community or Educational Project, Sonic Art and Stage Works. Works could also be submitted by the composers themselves, where previously they had to be submitted by publishers.

Though seven-time award winner Harrison Birtwistle has once again been shortlisted, this year for his stage work The Cure, 50 per cent of the nominees have been shortlisted for the first time. The number of nominated female composers has also reached an all-time high - women make up 38 per cent of the shortlist.

The winners will be announced at the British Film Institute (BFI) on Tuesday 6 December 2016, and BBC Radio 3 will broadcast exclusive coverage of the Awards on Hear and Now on Saturday 10 December.
