Conductor Andrew Litton is to become music director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
It's the first time the American maestro has held a post with the US orchestra since ending a 12-year stint with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2006. Litton is currently artistic advisor to the Colorado orchestra, but his new post will see him take on responsibility for its artistic leadership. He follows in the footsteps of the ensemble's previous conductors Jeffrey Kahane and Marin Alsop.
‘Over the past year, it became increasingly evident that the Colorado Symphony has what it takes to become one of American’s top orchestras,’ said Litton. ‘Its management knows what it takes to get there. It has made great strides in securing the orchestra’s future. Its superb musicians have passion for what they do. I want to be part of that winning team.’
Litton is already music director at the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway and conductor laureate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, he has been particularly acclaimed for his recordings of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, Mendelssohn Symphonies and Prokofiev orchestral works.
