The BBC has revealed the names of the five ensembles competing to be named Britain's most inspirational amateur orchestra.

In the new four-part series All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge, competitors will tackle a variety of musical challenges aided by mentor Chi-Chi Nwanoku, double-bassist and founder member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

'I don't think people realise what an extraordinary organism the amateur orchestra is,' said conductor Paul Daniel, who will be judging the competition. 'I want the audience to be aware where the orchestras are starting from, and to experience them getting better.'

The orchestras are:

  • The London Gay Symphony Orchestra
  • North Devon Sinfonia
  • Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra
  • Stirling Orchestra
  • The People's Orchestra

To find out more about the competitors and to read an exclusive interview with judge Paul Daniel, pick up a copy of the September issue of BBC Music Magazine.

The Great Orchestra Challenge will be broadcast at 9pm on 30 August on BBC Four.
