Orchestra celebrates move to  Salford Quays with 17-day bonanza

The BBC Philharmonic has announced that it will celebrate its move to MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, by holding a 17-day music festival in June.

BBC Philharmonic Presents… will take place at the new studio at MediaCityUk and will be broadcast live across seven national BBC Radio stations: BBC Radios 1-6 and BBC Radio Manchester. The music will range from dubstep to ecclesiastical in order to reflect each genre of the seven radio stations. The festival opens and closes with live broadcasts for Radio 3, starting with a live In Tune on 1 June and ending with Radio 3 Live in Concert on 17 June.

For BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra the BBC Philharmonic will perform a Dubstep Symphony with dubstep and drum & bass stars Nero and on BBC Radio 2 the leading men of the West End join the BBC Philharmonic for Friday Night is Music Night. The orchestra will then accompany the Manchester Chamber Choir in a Sunday Service led by Reverend Hayley Matthews on BBC Radio 4.

BBC Radio 5 Live's Kermode And Mayo's Film Review will feature extracts from popular film scores and BBC Radio 6 will broadcast a new oratorio for orchestra, electric guitars and vocal quartet by Californian composer and progressive rock musician Steven Mackey. The BBC Philharmonic will also join Salford Symphony Orchestra on BBC Radio Manchester for the drama, Salford Tales.

MediaCityUK will house the new home for several departments of the BBC, ITV, Coronation Street, SIS and the University of Salford and also includes 400 apartments, a Holiday Inn Hotel and a designated tram stop. Other BBC departments moving to the northern base are BBC Breakfast, BBC Children’s, BBC Learning, BBC Radio Five Live, BBC Sport and parts of BBC Future Media and Technology.
