Do you play in an amateur orchestra? If so, the BBC wants to hear from you. The search is on for the UK’s most inspirational amateur orchestra in a new TV series on BBC Four and BBC Two.

The Great British Amateur Orchestra will see five ensembles compete for a place in the final, to be aired on BBC Two. The winner will perform at a major public event in 2016. Applications to be one of the five competing orchestras are open from now until Friday 12 February 2016.

The four-part series is part of Get Playing, a new scheme to encourage people to pick up their instruments and make music. So if you’ve got a violin languishing in its case or a trumpet gathering dust in a cupboard, now is the moment to bring them out.

Full details of Get Playing are to be announced in the summer, but it will include coverage on radio, television and online. The initiative is in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Making Music, and Music for All.

There will also be a competition for The UK’s Best Part-Time Band, to be broadcast on BBC Two and Four.
