A new project focussing on the music and composers of the First World War has been launched by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Westminster Music Library.

Behind the Lines will explore the music of composers who were alive during World War One – including the likes of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, Bliss and Holst – in the centenary year of the conflict.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will deliver interactive workshops and creative projects at Westminster Music Library through RPO Resound, the orchestra's education programme, which also celebrates its 20th birthday this year. These activities, which will take place over a year from September 2013, will be designed for adults, families and school children and will take place in locations across Westminster and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The project has been given funding by Arts Council England.

Ian Maclay, managing director at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra said: '"Behind the Lines" is a very special opportunity for local communities to engage with Westminster Music Library, its collections and world-class musicians from the orchestra to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War'.
