Kathryn McDowell, managing director of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), has been made a CBE in this year’s Birthday Honours list, announced 11 June.
McDowell, who has held the post of MD at the orchestra since 2005, is joined in the honours list by jazz singer Claire Martin, who becomes an OBE. Chief executive of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), Roy McEwan, is also made an OBE.
In a statement on the SCO’s website McEwan said: ‘Any recognition of this kind is an accolade for the arts in Scotland. In my case, for all the organisations I’ve been lucky enough to work with over the last 30 years and, above all, for the wonderful Scottish Chamber Orchestra. I’m delighted and feel very privileged.’
Among those made MBE is Jonathan Bielby, retired director of music at Wakefield Cathedral, and Jacqueline Clifton, the founder of Musicians in Focus, a charity that works to improve access for young visually impaired musicians. They are joined by Matthew Peacock, who is also appointed MBE. Peacock is the founder of Streetwise Opera, a music charity that works with homeless people.
