Which discs would you take to your metaphorical island and why? That’s the question the British Academy is looking into in a day of events this November.

Cellist Steven Isserlis (left), folk musician Martin Carthy and jazz bassist Gavin Bryars, who have all appeared on the long-running Radio 4 programme, join professor of music at City University Stephen Cottrell for a panel discussion about the experience of choosing their discs.

The discussion event, called Music and Memories, aims to look at why music has such a deep connection with memory and our everyday lives.

It follows a day-long conference called Desert Island Discs and the discographic self which brings together musicologists, sociologists and media scholars from universities around the world.

During the day, speakers will be looking at the role of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in the modern media landscape, its historical and contextual significance as well as its imitators around the world.

Admission to the conference is free but you have to register and book on the British Academy website.
