The cities of Vienna and Sydney are joining forces for a New Year classical music celebration that will be projected live onto the outside of the famous Sydney Opera House.
The February event, entitled ‘Visions of Vienna’, is revolving around a concert by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ola Rudner that is celebrating some of the greatest works and composers who have worked in the Austrian capital. The programme will begin with Schubert’s The Magic Harp Overture and include works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Lehár. Of course a New Year's celebration wouldn’t be complete without a large segment given over to the master of the Viennese waltz, Johann Strauss II: the concert will culminate with his By the Beautiful Blue Danube.
The event, which will be streamed online worldwide, will incorporate projected images from Vienna’s art world, including paintings by Gustav Klimt and Art Nouveau architectural designs from around the city.
‘As the world tunes in to watch our players live in action for the first time on the sails of the Sydney Opera House, we will be saluting Vienna and its contribution to our art form,’ says Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s managing director Rory Jeffes. ‘And we’ll be giving a friendly wave to our musical counterparts at the many institutions in the Austrian capital.’
