Sunday’s episode of BBC One’s Countryfile is going to be a celebration of the birthday of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was born on 12 October 1872.

John Craven will be presenting the programme from the composer’s childhood home, Leith Hill Place, looking at his life and music in the context of the Surrey countryside.

Highlights include a performance of The Lark Ascending by violinist and conductor Christopher Warren-Green, as well as a look at a project by ecologists to make music from the landscape, something that involves stringing violins from trees and burying microphones in the forest.

Another musical highlight will be a performance of Vaughan Williams’s Linden Lea by the Capel Choral Society, which Warren-Green will conduct with Vaughan Williams’s own baton.

The programme will also feature a look back at past musical highlights on Countryfile, including presenter Matt Baker’s bell-ringing experience and a browse round Benjamin Britten’s Suffolk home.

Countryfile's 'music compilation' will be broadcast on Sunday 12 October at 18.20 on BBC One. Visit: bbc.co.uk/bbcone for further information
