Loretta Tomasi, chief executive of English National Opera, has announced that she will leave the role at the end of 2013.

Tomasi joined the company in May 2003 as executive director and was appointed chief executive in November 2005. Her departure follows that of Sir Peter Bazalgette earlier this year, who was succeeded as English National Opera chairman by Martyn Rose.

Tomasi said: ‘It has been a privilege to lead this amazing and extraordinary company, full of talented, dedicated people who all work so hard to produce the finest work. I am proud of what we have achieved together and I am confident that ENO’s future holds many more artistic triumphs.’

Rose praised Tomasi for her work, saying, ‘Loretta’s contribution to ENO over the last decade has been immense. She has steered the company through challenging times and enabled it to build a national and international reputation for excellent, highly dramatic opera that makes ENO unique.’

ENO has recently halved its money reserves to cover its £2.2m deficit for 2011/12. However, Tomasi has predicted that the company can clear the debt by the end of the opera house’s 2013/14 season.

English National Opera have said that they hope to have a successor in place before Tomasi leaves at the end of the year.
