Steven Price has won the Bafta for Best Original Music at the 2014 British Academy of Film and Television Awards.
Price’s score for Gravity, the big-budget sci-fi film starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, won him the award ahead of John Williams and Hans Zimmer, shortlisted for The Book Thief and 12 Years a Slave respectively. The other composers on the shortlist were Henry Jackman, for Captain Phillips, and Thomas Newman, for Saving Mr Banks.
Price, 36, collected his award at a glitzy ceremony at the Royal Opera House, where other winners included actress Cate Blanchett, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gravity’s director Alfonso Cuaron. On accepting the award, the Nottingham-born Price thanked his ‘mum and dad for having such a great record collection when I was a kid’.
The evening’s other winners included the Best Adapted Screenplay Bafta for Philomena, in which Steve Coogan plays the part of journalist Martin Sixsmith opposite Dame Judi Dench. Sixsmith himself, a keen classical music enthusiast, has written a feature on Russian music that will appear in the March issue of BBC Music Magazine, on sale on Wednesday 19 February.
