It has been announced that Jamie Phillips will become associate conductor of the Hallé Orchestra for the 2015-16 season.
Phillips, who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, first attracted attention internationally as the youngest competitor in the 2011 Besancon International Competition for Young Conductors.
He has been assistant conductor with the Hallé since 2012 and will continue to work closely with the orchestra’s music director, Sir Mark Elder, in this new role.
John Summers, chief executive of the Hallé, says, ‘We are delighted to continue our relationship with Jamie. He has flourished in his current role as assistant conductor and, at just 23 years old, has already achieved a great deal. We are very happy that he is able to remain part of the Hallé team and to be able to help him continue to develop his very special musical gifts.’
The youngest conductor to work with the Hallé, Phillips has shone over the past few years. He achieved incredible success in the finals of the Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2012 and, in December 2014, made his debut with the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg. He is soon to make his debut with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
When he takes the new post, Phillips will continue to act as music director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra with which he toured Germany in 2014. Phillips is also involved in many of the education programmes and concerts associated with the Hallé.
