With the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth falling this year, your free January cover disc celebrates the ever-popular German Romantic composer's music. You can listen to a clip from it here – just click play on the audio player on the right.

On this disc there's a rare chance to hear the exuberant Konzertstück for Four Horns, first performed 160 years ago in Leipzig. Conducted here by Sir Charles Mackerras in a performance recorded live at the BBC Proms in July 2007, the virtuosic work shows off the newly developed valve horn.

Schumann composed his Fourth Symphony in D minor in 1841 as a present for his wife Clara's 22nd birthday. A decade later, he revised the work and it's a rousing performance by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda of this 1851 version that completes the disc.
