Lang Lang to receive international artist of the year award at Classic BRITs

Chinese pianist honoured at annual awards

Lang Lang will be made International Artist of the Year at the Classic BRITs on 2 October.

The award recognises musicians who have achieved international success, and Lang Lang will also be credited with helping to popularise the piano as an instrument among learners, both at home in China and on a global scale.

Co-chairmen of the event Dickon Stainer and Barry McCann said in a statement: 'We are proud to honour Lang Lang with the award for International Artist of the Year… His continuing enthusiam, efforts and performances around the globe have helped encourage people of all ages to start playing the piano.'

Lang Lang has also been nominated in the categories Male Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for The Chopin Album.

He is set to perform at the ceremony in a duet with Female Artist of the Year nominee, violinist Nicola Benedetti. The event will be hosted by Myleene Klass, and broadcast on ITV1 on Sunday 6 October.
