The Last Night of the Proms is to be broadcast in 3D for the first time, the BBC has announced.

Eight specialist 3D cameras will film the concert, including one in front of the conductor, Jiří Bělohlávek, and a remote camera within the orchestra to give a 3D view of every instrument.

The concert takes place in the Royal Albert Hall on 8 September and includes works by Delius, Verdi, Puccini and Shostakovich – as well as traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ favourites. Violinist Nicola Benedetti – who features on the cover of this month’s BBC Music Magazine – joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

The BBC will also be broadcasting some of its Wimbledon coverage in 3D as well as the documentary series Planet Dinosaur.

Kim Shillinglaw, head of BBC 3D, said: ‘Bringing Planet Dinosaur and the Last Night of the Proms to audiences enable us to test the technology across various genres and establish where 3D really enhances the viewers’ experience.’

The programmes are part of the BBC’s two-year 3D trial and will be available to anyone with the free-to-air BBC HD channel and a 3D television.
