Mozart's little known opera buffa La finta Giardiniera will be staged at next year's Glyndebourne festival for the first time, members have been told in an email.

Robin Ticciati, who takes up the post of music director at the festival next year, will conduct the work which was premiered in 1775, when Mozart was 19.

Glyndebourne Festival Opera will celebrate its 80th anniversary next year and Gus Christie, executive chairman of the festival, contacted members with a preview of the 2014 programme.

The season will open with Richard Strauss’s comic opera Der Rosenkavalier. Directed by Richard Jones and conducted by Robin Ticciati, the production will star soprano Kate Royal in the role of the Marschallin. La finta Giardiniera will be directed by Frederic Wake-Walker in his Festival debut.

The season’s third new production is Verdi’s La Traviata, which was last performed at the Sussex opera house in 1988. Sir Mark Elder will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Tom Cairns’s production, with soprano Venera Gimadieva taking the role of Violetta in her Glyndebourne debut.

Robin Ticciati will become Glyndebourne’s seventh festival music director. Ticciati’s first professional operatic engagement was with the opera house: in 2004, he was assistant conductor for Die Zauberflöte for Glyndebourne on Tour. He will succeed Vladimir Jurowski, who has been the festival's music director since 2000.
