Nicholas Collon has been appointed assistant conductor for the 2011/12 season with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO).

Collon is best known for his work with the Aurora Orchestra, which recently won Best Ensemble at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. The ensemble has also recently been given Arts Council funding for the first time.

His role with the LPO will see him conducting concerts in Dorking and Eastbourne as well as a family concert at the Royal Festival Hall in October. Collon will also conduct the Foyle Future Firsts ensemble in September – an apprenticeship scheme for young musicians run by the LPO.

Following the announcement, Collon said he was ‘thrilled’ about the appointment, adding ‘I am particularly excited to be working closely with Vladimir Jurowski, who has already been a huge support to me, and also to working with the London Philharmonic on such a wide range of wonderful repertoire.’

Collon will be appearing at this year’s Proms with both the Aurora Ensemble and the London Sinfonietta.
