Sheffield's Music in the Round is putting on a concert with an entry fee of just 1p this Saturday (24 January).
Taking place at the 980-seat Crucible Theatre, Music in the Round’s ‘Pay What You Want’ concert asks for a starting price of 1p for entry, with audiences invited to donate more if they can or if they feel they would like to.
The concert will feature Music in the Round’s house ensemble, Ensemble 360, performing Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture in an arrangement for chamber group, along with Ravel’s Tzigane for violin and piano and Ligeti’s Musica ricercata and Six Bagatelles combined in an arrangement for piano and wind quintet.
By tackling the often-discussed perception that classical concerts are too expensive for many to go to, Music in the Round hopes to draw in new listeners.
‘We are really excited to be presenting Ensemble 360 in the grand setting of the main Crucible Theatre,’ says artistic director of Music in the Round Angus Smith. ‘The group is renowned for their wonderful rapport and musicianship, but this spectacular programme also allows them to demonstrate their amazing virtuosity. We see this as a perfect occasion for people to discover just how exciting classical music can be, especially when played by truly world-class musicians.’
