It has been announced that tenor Luciano Pavarotti is to be honoured with a posthumous award at this year’s Classic Brits.
The honour, which will be collected by his widow Nicoletta Mantonani-Pavarotti, is presented in memory of artists who have made an international impact with their music. Pavarotti was due to receive the Classic Brits Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, but died before he was able to collect it.
Speaking about the award, Mantovi-Pavarotti said: ‘It is wonderful that the music industry is honouring Luciano in this way, particularly at a time when we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first recording.’
She added: ‘It is beautiful that the Classic Brit Awards are helping to keep his memory alive.’
Pavarotti’s first recording has been re-mastered for release on Decca Records as part of an album of 50 of his best-known tracks.
The ceremony takes place on 2 October at the Royal Albert Hall and will include performances by Gareth Malone’s Voices choir, violinist Nicola Benedetti and pianist Lang Lang. Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja will perform a special tribute to Pavarotti.
