Radio 3 is to broadcast a weekly chart for the first time in its history, starting today (12 April).

The station is to reveal the results of the Top 20 Official Specialist Classical Chart every Monday at 5pm during the afternoon drivetime show In Tune. As well as the weekly rundown, the show will play a track from the disc claiming the number one spot.

On Tuesdays, the Breakfast programme will explore the chart further, with clips from the featured discs. Plus listeners will be able to track the chart online at Radio 3’s new-look website, which will include clips of the week’s top twenty plus updates of the chart’s rises and falls.

The Top 20 Official Specialist Classical Chart was launched in 2009 and is compiled on a weekly basis to track sales of classical repertoire, excluding compilations and soundtracks, released within the last two years.

‘It should prove thoroughly entertaining and enlightening and I’m sure it’ll scupper some crusty old preconceptions!’ said Breakfast presenter Rob Cowan.
