BBC Radio 3 triumphed at the Sony Radio Academy awards last night, scooping the national station of the year award, the first time the station has won the ac

colade at a ceremony traditionally dominated by BBC Radios 1, 2 and 4. Praising Radio 3’s colourful, varied and entertaining output, the judges said it had ‘sustained a particularly strong schedule of appealing breadth, with a subtle combination of challenging and accessible material that is presented in a thoroughly entertaining manner’.

Radio 3 also won three further Gold awards: the Music Special Award for Vaughan Williams: Valiant for Truth, presented by Stephen Johnson; the Music Programme Award for the late-night Sunday series Words and Music; and the Feature Award for Between the Ears: Staring at the Wall in which Alan Dein captured the sounds and thoughts of everyday life outside the walls of London’s Pentonville prison.

Roger Wright, Radio 3 controller, told bbcmusicmagazine.com: 'To win four Gold awards is great, and that’s on top of four consecutive quarterly rises in listener figures. The Sony awards are the Oscars of the radio industry and people do take notice of them. These awards reflect Radio 3’s huge range – our Chopin Experience weekend last May seemed to hit home; so too did the fact that we broadcast the whole of Milton’s Paradise Lost; and then, of course, the entire Proms season as a big part of that. I’m really pleased because everyone at Radio 3 deserves this.'

The Sony Awards, presented each year since 1983, recognise the very best of the UK radio industry, nationally and regionally, and reward journalists, writers, producers, performers and broadcasters. For information on all the awards presented last night, go to www.radioawards.org/news/
