Conductor Sir Simon Rattle is to make a rare UK appearance when the Berlin Philharmonic comes to London for a series of four concerts in 2011.

Apart from a few one-off concerts, Rattle has been an unusual sight in his native country since becoming chief conductor of the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic in 2002.

But the Barbican and Southbank Centres announced yesterday an unprecedented joint partnership to bring Rattle and his orchestra to the UK capital for the London Concerts in a year’s time. The series will open in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the 20 February 2011, with the mini-festival including symphonies by Haydn and Mahler, as well as a UK premiere of a Horn Concerto by Toshio Hosokawa. A performance of Mahler's colossal Third Symphony in the Royal Festival Hall concludes the orchestra's UK visit.

'This is a rare opportunity for us to perform four concerts over consecutive days, and will enable us to share with London audiences the heart of our work,' says Rattle. 'I am particularly pleased that our visit opens with a chamber music concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, spotlighting individual talents from the Orchestra.'
