Members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) are to swap their instruments for running shoes to run a 150-mile relay race to their summer home in Tanglewood. Each year the orchestra decamps from its winter home in Boston for its summer season at the Tanglewood estate in the Berkshire hills in Massachusetts. And this year 14 musicians will be making the trip on foot, arriving in time for the opening night on 3 July.

After a brass fanfare send-off from Symphony Hall in Boston on 29 June, the runners – who include orchestral musicians, their family members, and BSO staff – will complete a 32-leg journey to Tanglewood. Leading the way will be BSO double bassist Todd Seeber who, along with violinist James Cooke, came up with the idea of the two-day run as a way of celebrating the new concert season.

‘Being avid runners ourselves and knowing several other orchestra musicians who love running as much as we do, Todd Seeber and I thought it would be incredibly fun to organise a relay run from Symphony Hall to Tanglewood,’ says Cooke. ‘With friends and family sponsoring us, we also hope to raise a few funds for the BSO.’
