The 2018 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards celebrate young and established artists across a variety of categories. BBC Radio 3 describe the RPS Awards as ‘the Oscars, the BAFTAs and the Grammys of classical music’. The awards have an illustrious history, with previous winners including singers Bryn Terfel and two-time winner Joyce DiDonato, as well as conductors Sir Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado.

Nominations for the RPS Conductor Award, sponsored by BBC Music Magazine, include 2006 winner Vladimir Jurowski of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Opera House’s Music Director Antonio Pappano.

Brett Dean’s new opera Hamlet leads the award shortlist with nominations in four categories. Also with four nominations is BBC Music, notably for the BBC Proms Relaxed Prom which is for children and adults with autism, sensory and communication impairments and learning disabilities.

In anticipation of the awards, Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society John Gilhooly comments that ‘the musical ambition and talent on display in these shortlists is extraordinary’. He goes on to discuss the classical music scene this year, saying that there ‘is exciting collaboration across art forms which bodes very well for the future of classical music’.

The results will be announced on 9 May, with BBC Radio 3 broadcasting the ceremony on Monday 14 May at 7.30pm. Tickets to the awards presentation and dinner are currently available here.
