Saxophonist Stephanie Lai has won the Junior Guildhall's most prestigious award, the Lutine Prize, in a final held at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on 26 May.

Second prize went to 18-year-old percussionist, Richard Rayner, who also appeared in the percussion category final of BBC Young Musician 2012 earlier this year.

Each competitor had to perform a 20-minute recital and Stephanie, originally from Hong Kong, played music including Planel’s Prélude et Saltarelle, Jolivet’s Fantaisie Impromptu, Bozza’s Aria and Milhaud’s Scaramouche.

The other finalists were, oboist Francesca Cox, 16, singer Edward Gaffney, 18, trumpeter Matilda Lloyd, 17 and violinist Joanna Wu, 17.

The Lutine Prize is supported by the Lloyd’s Charities Trust, and was founded in 1982. The competition is named after Lloyds of London’s Lutine bell, which used to ring to announce the loss of a ship, or other important news, at the insurer’s office.
