A giant portrait of one of the Romantic era's most recognisable composers, Franz Schubert, appeared briefly on Fife’s Elie Beach yesterday afternoon (Monday 30 June) before disappearing under the incoming tide.
Commissioned by East Neuk Festival to highlight its Schubertiad weekend, which takes place from 5-6 July, the portrait was created by Sand in Your Eye, the team responsible for sculptures of steam engines, a pilgrim ship, the Isle of May lighthouse and a bust of Beethoven in the past.
East Neuk’s Schubertiad is a two-day celebration of Schubert’s music led by pianist Christian Zacharias and featuring pianist Llyr Williams, the Gould Piano Trio, soprano Malin Christensson and members of the Belcea Quartet and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Works will include the landmark Piano Trio in E flat, D929 and the 'Unfinished' Symphony No. 8 in B flat.
