UK Jazz Radio, the latest British jazz radio station, was officially launched this week with an initial audience of 15,000. Spawned from a successful local radio jazz programme by presenter-turned station director Brian Soundy, it has been developed with the slogan ‘From jazz people for jazz people’.

The station is attracting a presenter line-up from top players in the British jazz scene led by saxophonist Mornington Lockett (left), who selects tracks to play on his show with the help of his cat. UK pianists Steve Melling, Kit Downes and Tom Cawley are also featuring, as is director Soundy, himself a bassist. And while Australian jazz vocalist Nina James is generating a ‘Jazz Downunder’ following from Brisbane, singer Nora McCarthy brings a Stateside outlook from New York.

UK Jazz Radio’s bosses have opted for internet radio with rotating show times to cope with the international time zones. Keeping FM coverage in London as a future option, Soundy says: 'Internet is the way forward, as its accessible to everybody and car internet radio now works brilliantly. We have a vision of pure jazz 24/7’.

The station is supporting this year’s British Jazz Awards and by way of its ‘Jazz Radio Showcases’ it offers a package to promote new bands at festivals and jazz venues across the UK and Europe. London jazz haunt The Bull's Head in Barnes will be featured shortly.
