Grammy Award-winning violinist James Ehnes has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of ‘his accomplishments as a concert violinist’ says the Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean.

Ehnes, who began violin studies at the age of four and who has received acclaim both in Canada and abroad will be awarded with the Order of Canada insignia in a ceremony to be held at later date.

Widely acclaimed as one of the world’s top virtuoso violinists, Ehnes’ achievements include two recordings of Paganini’s Caprices, and his Grammy award-winning recording of the Korngold, Walton and Barber concertos.

This summer Ehnes will perform at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and at the BBC Proms in August with the BBC Philharmonic and Gianandrea Noseda.

Appointments to the Order of Canada are made on the recommendation of an Advisory Council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. This year’s list of appointments also include astronaut Julie Payette and 2010 Winter Olympic organizer John Furlong.

Notable past appointments include actor Michael J Fox, rock singer Neil Young and jazz vocalist Diana Krall.
