Saxophonist Jonathan Radford was presented with the Gold Medal on the evening of Monday 4th June at the grand final of the Royal Over-Seas League’s Annual Music Competition, this year held at the newly-reopened Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank.

The competition saw Jonathan compete against bass-baritone Michael Mofidian, pianist Florian Mitrea and violinist Emmanuel Bach in an event that showcased the talents of young musicians from across the Commonwealth.

'We’ve had another year of exceptional talent displayed at the ROSL Annual Music Competition, from the first round of video applications to the competitors performing in the Queen Elizabeth Hall tonight,' said ROSL Arts Director, Geoff Parkin. 'We wish Jonathan the very best and look forward to supporting him in his career.'

Jonathan Radford has performed as a soloist at major venues across Europe including Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square, Bridgewater Hall and Philharmonie de Paris. His winning programme included works by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Takashi Yoshimatsu and Karen Khachaturian.

The panel of adjudicators this year included members from the music industry and former Annual Music Competition competitors, including Gavin Henderson CBE (Royal Central School of Speech & Drama), Sam Jackson (Classic FM), Sarah Field (saxophonist and trumpeter), Sally Burgess (mezzo soprano and RCM professor), Libby Abrahams (Keynote Artist Management) and John Myerscough (cellist and 2006 Gold Medal winner).

A non-profit private members’ club, the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) was founded in 1910. Over a period of 66 years the ROSL Annual Music Competition has offered awards totalling £75,000 each year to young musicians from the UK and the Commonwealth.
