Peter Moore who, at the age of 12, became the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician competition in 2008, is making his debut on Chandos Records. Moore, now 14, is featuring on a disc of concertos by British composer Edward Gregson, performing his Trombone Concerto from 1979. This is the same Concerto that was commissioned for trombonist Michael Hext, a year after he had won the inaugural BBC Young Musician competition in 1978.

The CD, with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Bramwell Tovey, will be the third volume of concertos by Gregson released on Chandos. It will also include Gregson’s Cello Concerto performed by another former BBC Young Musician winner (in 2000) – cellist Guy Johnston. The disc surveys Gregson’s career, from early highlights such as his Music for Chamber Orchestra (1968), through to a recent orchestral concerto.

‘I am delighted that Peter Moore is the soloist for the premiere recording of my Trombone Concerto,’ says Gregson. ‘At the young age of 14 he is still at the beginning of his playing career, but few will doubt his potential as a trombonist and musician of the highest calibre.’

The disc of Edward Gregson concertos featuring trombonist Peter Moore, cellist Guy Johnston and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Bramwell Tovey is released on Chandos next February.

Coverage of BBC Young Musician 2010 begins on Friday 16 April (time, tbc) on BBC Four. The Final will be broadcast on BBC Two on Sunday 16 May (time, tbc) and on Radio 3.
