Opera singer dies following scooter accident

The Italian dramatic tenor Salvatore Licitra has died after suffering head injuries when he crashed his scooter on 27 August. He was 43.
Licitra lost control of the scooter near the city of Ragusa and was flown to hospital in Catania, Sicily. His girlfriend was with him on the scooter but was unhurt.
After undergoing emergency surgery Licitra fell into a coma, which he never came out of.
The Swiss-born tenor had been hailed as the heir to Pavarotti and had stood in for the legendary singer at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 2002. He had also recently appeared at La Scala, Milan and the Staatsoper, Hamburg.
