Radio 3 Live in Concert, Dvořák
Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Matthias Pintscher
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra take us on a musical trip across the Atlantic as they begin a weekend of free concerts with their artist-in-association, New York conductor Matthias Pintscher. Today’s concert features Dvořák’s much-loved Symphony No. 9 (‘From the New World’). During a visit to America between 1892-1895, Dvořák was inspired by Native American music and African-American spirituals. He composed the symphony in 1893 after a commission from the New York Philharmonic, and he said the work embodied and developed the 'peculiarities of the Indian music'. The concert will be broadcast live from Glasgow City Halls.
