Donald Macleod presents a week of programmes celebrating the life of composer Muzio Clementi. The first episode looks at a selection of the pianos manufactured by Clementi, as well as exploring his contribution to the instrument’s repertoire. The story is heard from the perspective of an Englishman visiting Clementi’s native Italy, who saw the young pianist perform and insisted on taking him to England as an apprentice and performer. After seven years in the Dorset countryside spent perfecting his art, Clementi was able to travel to London to make his mark as a fine pianist and theorist on the instrument. His treatise Introduction to the Art of playing on the Pianoforte remains important for an understanding of the piano today, as does his collection of studies for the piano, Gradus ad Parnassum.
