Shortlist revealed for 10th British Composer Awards

BirtwistleThe 39 works shortlisted for this year’s British Composer Awards have been unveiled by the British Acadmey of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA).

Composers nominated include Thomas Ad├Ęs, Gabriel Jackson, Emily Howard and Kaija Saariaho. Sir Harrison Birtwistle (left) is the only composer whose work appears on the shortlist twice – his piece Angel Fighter is shortlisted in the Choral category and Concerto for Violin and Orchestra is up for the Orchestral award.

Over 300 pieces of music were submitted for the awards, which will be announced in a ceremony at Goldsmiths’ Hall, London, on Monday 3 December.

‘In the year in which BASCA presents the British Composer Awards for the 10th consecutive occasion,’ said the chairman of the awards, Sarah Rodgers, ‘it is a delight to announce a shortlist which so clearly demonstrates the range, reach and richness of contemporary composition in the UK today.’

Several composers have been shortlisted for the first time, including Rebecca Saunders, in the Orchestral category for her work Still, and Austrian composer Thomas Larcher, in the International category for his Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. Larcher’s work was premiered at the 2011 BBC Proms by violinist Viktoria Mullova and cellist Matthew Barley.

The British Composer Awards will be announced in a ceremony on 3 December, which will then be broadcast on Radio 3 on Sunday 9 December.
