Tokyo String Quartet performs
- Article Type: | New Release |
The Tokyo String Quartet was formed in 1969 and is set to retire at the end of this season. The ensemble’s penultimate recording, of Brahms’s Clarinet and Piano Quintets, is out now on Harmonia Mundi.
The recording was given four stars in the current issue of BBC Music Magazine. Our critic, Calum MacDonald, wrote: ‘The Piano Quintet, Op. 34 and Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115, are seldom coupled together, yet make a natural and mutually illuminating pairing… On this new release, both works receive performances that understand and warmly identify with Brahms’s intentions: the playing is expressive and there is an obvious love of the music throughout.’
Plus, in this month's magazine, the quartet’s viola player, Kazuhide Isomura, looks back on the group’s recordings on p15 of this month’s issue.
