Soprano Amanda Roocroft looks at the operatic history of Madame Butterfly.

Originally the subject of a short novel, the character was introduced into the operatic genre by Puccini and presents a demanding and complex role for any performer.

Sopranos Angela Gheorghiu, Anne Sophie Duprels and Victoria De Los √Āngeles contribute their experiences of performing the role while author Lesley Downer and opera enthusiast Rod Wood unpick the context surrounding Madame Butterfly.

Members of the Northern Ballet and Opera North also help to reveal the enchanting journey behind one of the world’s most popular operas.
