This month marks 100 years since the infamous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and almost exactly a century later, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the work at the Southbank Centre, London. Upon attending the premiere Puccini described the work as ‘the creation of a madman’ and it was to leave the direction of music altered forever.
The fact that it is now widely accepted as a masterpiece and makes frequent appearances in concert halls makes hearing it today no less electrifying.
Also on the programme is Debussy’s Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune and Varèse’s Amériques.
