The spectre of death hangs over Tchaikovsky’s heart-rending 'Pathétique' symphony. It was premiered just nine days before the composer’s death in 1893 and is dedicated to his nephew, Vladimir Davydov, with whom the composer was in love and who tragically committed suicide in 1906.
This programme is the climax of a week-long series of Tchaikovsky symphonies on Sky Arts 2 HD. Superstar conductor Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra make an explosive team in their native repertoire.
The strength of their tradition and passion for this music will be in evidence all week, not least in the 'Pathétique'’s devastating climax.
