David Starkey

In his first television series for the BBC, historian David Starkey explores the connections between the British monarchy and some of our most famous music and musicians. Over four programmes, Starkey reveals to what extent the monarchy supported music and influenced its course.

In the first episode, the focus is on monarchs who were composers themselves – namely Henry V and Henry VIII – and Starkey explores how both their military achievements and their music inspired envy in their European neighbours.

The programme includes specially recorded performances from the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, Canterbury Cathedral Choir and Eton College Choir, as well as early music ensemble Alamire.
